Picard, Edmond
(1836-1924)
   Born in Brussels, Edmond Picard, together with Octave Maus (1856-1919), founded the review l'Art moderne in 1866. The periodical served to promote the principle of art as an active participant in the work of social action in contrast to the view of "art for art's sake" then advocated in La Jeune Belgique. A lawyer, writer, and politician who served as a Socialist Party senator, Picard created the Libre Académie Picard in 1906, which advanced the notion of a "Belgian soul" that comprised a synthesis of the very best of the Latin and Germanic peoples. In doing so, his efforts carried nationalistic, racist, and anti-Semitic overtones. Picard died in Dave-sur-Meuse.
